Was surprised and delighted when Prof Ian McBride’s email arrived, asking me to contribute to a series where historians, social scientists, journalists and writers pick five books about our conflict that influenced them most.
I wrote a short piece on voice and story. Choosing Joan Lingard, Susan McKay, Fionnuala O’Connor, Madeline Leonard - my favourite story seekers and tellers from recent generations. And also Guy Beiner, excavating 1798, showing us how to find hidden voices.
